IN ...

Atanas Totlyakov

IN ((Latin)) – in the composition of the word meaning inclusion .
INTROVERT – a person giving more importance to his inner world than the outer. Contrary to extrovert.

IN… Project is caused the by inner conviction that in the time of “absolute” extroversion there is still hope to get insight of our thoughts, feelings and dreams.

The inner world of a dynamic man of the 21st century has become “smaller” and less familiar. The Ego is on display, turned into a luxury PR package, demonstrated by the excessive urge for business discussions, business contacts and electronic social networks. The result achieved is an increased level of stress. IN ... is the realization that man is much more than a good public presentation. IN ... is the forgotten philosophical principle for getting to know oneself by inclusion of the sense of touch as the primary source of information.

DESCRIPTION OF THE IDEA

Type of work - installation in a park environment with the inclusion of visual and tactile elements.
The main emphasis in the project – reconsidering aesthetic through touch.

SITUATION:
The work is presented in a park environment with separate seating places (benches). Relief-plastic objects made of plastic plates (two on each bench), each 75/50 cm in size, are installed on 5 of the benches.
They are situated on the left and the right of the center at an angle towards the horizontal sitting plane. The angle is consistent with the possibility for ergonomically placing the hands on them by the seated person. There is a separate sitting place in the center of the bench. Anyone sitting there can comfortably rest his/her hands on the relief panels. That is the main objective of the installation – the contact with the modeled surface “includes” in his/her mind the focus on the senses as a source of information. The onlooker-feeler has the opportunity to explore with his/her palms and fingers the shaped composition, made specifically for tactile effect, to trace the relief lines leading to places with a different structure and smoothness. In everyday life we forget about the tactile sense, we do not feel the clothes we put on, or accidentally touching the other, however huge amount of sensory information is received every minute by our brain.
The focus of the tactile sensation will be reinforced by the verbal element. In front of each seat there will be a standing two-sided “pyramid”. On the side facing the man sitting on the bench there will be a text that accurately describes the sequence of actions necessary for the perception of the work. For example: “Sit on the bench. Place your hands on the carved panels. Focus on touch. Close your eyes and dream.”

A variant of the described installation is designed for locations where it is possible one sitting place to be made.

Use of color:
Colour is not of practical importance for the tactile effects of the work. The choice of color is consistent only with the aesthetic perception of the installation from a distance. Proper in this case, are the active colors - cadmium orange, contrasting with the green shades of the plants and the gray nuances of the pedestrian walkways.

The work offers a second idea aspect related to the opportunity the installation to be perceived by people with visual disabilities (both people with bad vision and those who have completely lost their vision). In this context, the active color would be of significance for those with the poor sight.
